When Gum Pain is Serious

Toothache pain is undeniable and sends people to urgent care and emergency rooms every day. Gum pain, on the other hand, may be considered an annoyance and may not get the same attention until and unless it becomes unbearable. Neglecting to have your gum pain addressed can do more harm than good.
Why Are My Gums Sore?
There are many causes for sore gums. This condition is experienced by millions of people on a regular basis. Most people notice the sensitivity when they are brushing or flossing. Bleeding may accompany the soreness. Generally, since gum pain is not severe, it is easily ignored; but it could be the indicator of a serious problem in the making.
Causes for Sore Gums
Sore gums can be caused by infection, mechanics and lifestyle choices. Brushing your teeth too aggressively can affect the gums. Certain nutrient deficiencies, hormonal changes and medical conditions can also present with sore gums. Some common causes are as follows:
- Gingivitis – This is the earliest sign of gum disease and easily treatable. Neglecting this stage of gum disease can lead to a more serious condition.
- Periodontitis – The more advanced stage of gum disease, periodontitis, can ultimately lead to tooth and bone loss as well as other health problems.
- Diet – Deficiency in vitamin K can cause gum problems. Eating healthy, nutritious foods can prevent sore gums and gum disease when good oral hygiene measures are in place, too.
- Tobacco use – In addition to staining teeth and increasing your risk for oral cancer, tobacco use can also lead to sore gums.
- Poor oral hygiene – Failure to brush and floss regularly or improper oral care can increase the likelihood of gum disease.
- Stress – Cortisol levels increase with stress and produce inflammation in the body. This can also affect the gums.
- Food debris – Every now and then an individual may experience gum pain due to a popcorn hull or other small piece of food getting stuck between the gum and a tooth.
If the debris is not removed, it can cause pain and may lead to infection.
It is important to have the cause of your gum pain identified. Neglecting to do so can eventually lead to more serious dental problems.
